Romance strikes again at Sugarland!

Bakers are fortunate to play a crucial part in one of the most important days in the life of a couple, their wedding day.  We like to say that people remember just two things about a wedding: the dress and the cake.  Sugarland’s kitchen has created thousands of beautiful and unique wedding cakes since our opening three and a half years ago and we still relish the opportunity to create uniquely delicious creations for each of our brides.

Occasionally we have the opportunity to enter the picture a little earlier, as in the case of Stephen Hudson. Stephen contacted Sugarland as early as July about his plans to propose to his girlfriend, Heather. As one of their favorite date spots, Stephen wanted to incorporate Sugarland into his proposal. Stephen and his girlfriend live in Gibson, NC but visit Franklin Street frequently on date nights to dine, window shop, and of course, pay a visit to Sugarland for after-dinner treats!  Stephen contacted our catering manager in July to make plans for his proposal scheduled this past Friday, October 28th. With practically no parameters other than that the proposal was occuring at Sugarland and that he wanted a delicious Sugarland cake to deliver the message, the Sugarland masterminds came up with this beauty of a cake for Stephen and his girlfriend:

The “jewel” itself is pure sugar cast in a silicon mold, but the box itself is all cake.

Here’s a view of the work in progress back in our kitchens (I just love the bow on top!).

The plan for the afternoon was that the couple would go window shopping on Franklin Street as they often did on a date and stroll past Sugarland where, unbeknownst to Heather, a proposal crafted in cake would be waiting for her in the window.

Tucked innocently among our usual cupcakes and case cakes, the little ring box cake garnered quite a few stares from passers-by in the hour or so it spent in the window waiting for Stephen and Heather’s arrival.  Sugarland staff was waiting almost as anxiously for the moment as Stephen was, with the entire kitchen and counter staff peeking over their shoulders every few minutes waiting for the couple to arrive. Of course the weather on Friday wasn’t exactly conducive to hours of window shopping and after what seemed like hours of waiting on our side, the moment came.

I think it’s safe to say she was surprised.

Stephen’s best friend, Scott, helped the afternoon go off without a hitch, arriving early and being the first to celebrate with the happy couple. Sugarland wishes a hearty congratulations to Stephen and Heather and is honored to have played a part in their very special day.
